Under the repnblloan sugar bounty system thi country lias started well on the road toward producing all the suijïar T"e consume. In 1891 we produeed 12,604,838 pounds oí beet sugrar, and last year 25,282,000 poimds, a gain oí more that 100 jxr cent. in a eingle yeur. At this percentage of inerease we sljoiiikl produce all the sugar we use te.'ort rnaaiy years, but unfortunately, tlif sugar industry will probably be tbe fiist to fall before the demosratis pollcy of destruction. Itfyonil doubt one of tli-e first steps of the new government will be to aboïi.sh tlie sugar bounty and surrender the American market without a struggte to the bounty fed beet sugar producers of Europe. WrstTii farmers hava hoped that the gr)wing of sugar beets might be matte profitable as an avenue of escape from the overproduction of cereal. To close this avenue is a necessary step in the free trade programme, which hae flecreed that the lot of American agriculture s-hall be the growing of more eotton and cereals at lower prices.
