James D. Wtoans died January 21, 1894, at tlie ripe oíd age of 88 years 11 months and 7 days. The deceased was born at Coxsackie, Dutchess co., New York, Feb. 14, 1805, carne to Michigan in 1835, and located in Detroit, where he "vorked at his traile, a tanner and currier. In 1837 he boughit 320 acres of lamd in Unadilla townshiip. Livingston coutny. Jan. 4, 1838, he was married to Miss Sarah Hlllyard. The following liaren they put all their personal efiects on a lumber wagon, hitched on their oxteam and drove to the farm. Did not like a frontier life. In 1841 they exehanged their farm there for the one where he has since 11 ved. An abolitioníst in the early days and since then a staunch repubMean. He wás a great lover of his country, and save foiir years service of one son, the lü'e of another, besides a liberal ainount of money during the late great rebellion, that his country might live. He leaves a wife and four children, Mrs. Eleanor E. Diamond, of Hastings ; Xiles H., of Grand Itapids ; Stephen 13., oí Aun Arbor, and Martha D. Diamond, of Grand Bapids, to mourn his loss. He was one of the now very few oíd pioneers left in the country for miles about.
