Il cracked and snapped, danced and Jumped, as if the demon of fire was holding e high carnival and celebrating the end ol the world. From every ide e,ould be heara sounds ■ Uring ol cannon, and the shrieks of dying human beings. 11 was the faUing of the boughs and the sighLng of the wind, but I never heer horrible a soumi nor witnessed so weird and terrible a 3ight. Hastlly awaki ning the o. her men ín the camp, I mounted a horse and fled from the llames. Bul the horse could not keep pace wiih the progresa of the fire. The lurid heavens looked as though they were at motten heal ; the aü' was stifling ; the smoke almost suffocated me, while falling leaves and boughs burned my horse, an ! the sickening odór of burned flesh led to the horror. Within . vro or lh' bours I was in an opening where 1 was no longer in danger, bul my horse -was badly injured, while my i tiing was ful] of holes wnere embers had struck me.
