The orchestra was at its best and furnished a revelation oí artistic interpretation in its expressions of thought will and sentiment. Indivldiially and en uiasse the members of the irganization appealed in their niasterly svork to everv responsive chord. The selections of the orchestra were chosen ii' vaiidy and every where buowed the same ütfiBhed strength and beauty. Emil Mollenhauer'sconducting was tliat of a niastcr, and liis baton was followed with eiectrical response in every ïnovemeut. Tiie delicate playing of the örst violin and repeaters in perfect time and action was a feature. The orchesl ral selections were : overture, Lenore No. 3, Beethoven ; andante and gavotte froui suite, Bach; Handel 's Largo, suite for orchestral opus 42 - 1, In a Haunted Forest ; 2, A Summeridyl; ö, Tlie Shepherdess' song; 4, Forest Spirits, the composition of Mcl)ovell, a Boston boy ; Rhapsodie No. 1 in F, Liszt ; overature, Tannhaeuser, Wagner, Miss Knsi' Stewart, contralto, was unable to iill her engagement on account of a severe cold. The three soloists, Winternitz, violin, Friedham, piano and Gieze violincellist, took tlie house by storm and in their efforts showed liow iustly earned and bestowed their world wide reputations are. Mr. Winternitz' first number, Concertina, by Ernst, showed bis wonderful teclmique and caufdit the appreciation of every eye and ear. Au enthuastic encoré gave the audience a well adapted allegro movement of bis own composition. The piano plaving of Herr Friedheim, in the concerto for orchestra and piano, No. 1, in F flat, Liszt, was a wonderfuí exposition of the power and quality of the instrument as well as the expression of lus genius. He replaced Miss Stewart on the program and her secondselection gave SchuBert'a Erl King with exquisite effect. Ilis work in each of his four selections was received with the greatest enthusiasiu. Fritz Gieze violincellist, re-established himself in Fitchburg minds in his O Caro Memoria, of Serváis and in hisencore a pretty little thought Erom Popper. The execution of Winternitz, Friedheiin and Gieze can be described adequatelv only in sirperlatives. They gave the finest treat of miuiy years.
