The uliiquitous book "igtnt, wilh his veisatile (Irgiription of the eomirehensive contenta of liis sample ci))-, wifch its well thumbed pages, has seaicely left uur sanctum sanctoiura, wli;n in comes a spruce young man with a sample box of patent aluminum and eopper and cast-iroïi writtng pens. warranted not to rust or eorrode, benei, break, twist or sputter ; fae is closely lol owed by t'.ie or.earmed man ith a buutlie oí penci's, onl.v ivecentsa bunch, .wairanted neTer to break wben sharpened, etc. Thls p-redatoafy merchant is scarcely out of the door wlicn a slimy. gpeasy, dirt-btgrimcd paper is liovod under our nose, settiny tovth tiiüt the bearer has 'been unfortunate, lost most of liis natural resources, incltiding energy, and beseeehing aid in money, else will do ; then the professional tramp witil a eore ann swathed in enongh rags to glut a paper mili, strikes us with : "lly friend, can't you help a poor feller uho is laid up and out o' work ; haven't had anything to eat for two days ; just a dime or a nickle 'ill do sir,' - and yet one-half of the world wonders how the other half gets a living. Ou r esteemed republlcan contení - I porary, the Courier, has oiled up lts j mud-slinger and begun business jthus I early on the democratie candidates. llie Argüe respecta Wie Courier and I its editors, and at the same time [ wishes to remark that the Courier's style of personal eampaigning can be ; better aíforded by t'.ie democratie i candida U-a than by the Courier itselï. - A rgus. The Courier lias the greatest rerespect lor the extensive array oí able and wltty editors of the Argus, both imported and doraestie, but at the same time wishes to remark that it detesta a tprevaricator, and that iï any one asserts that the Courier has made a ■personal attack" upon the democratie candidates, or any one of them, he either -villful 'y misrepresents or is too ignorant of the English language to comprehond what a "personal attack" is. No one but a coward, I3ro. Argus, indulges in personalities, unless attacked in that way. Of course there is a class of editors -vvho when closely pushed for argument resort to dirty flings and low-down personalities in the hope of exti-icating themselves in the minds of their readers, but such thmgs are not looked upon as honorable in the proi'ession, or applauded by the peojilt' generally.
