Ionia, Mich., Sept. 14.- Several monlhs ago ïliomas E. Barkwortn met ;m Ionia professional man. Durtng ilie conversation he lamented the drain on his jmrse and time of a political carnpaign, ending with, "My dear sir, il you ever heav of my running for office or accepting a nomination, or entering politics, you send me a telegram at once, at my expense, notifying me ifcliat I am a selfconvicted ass." ' On hearing of liarkwortli's nomination at Adrián, Sept. 11, his Ionia friend indited the folio wing telegram : Ionia, Mich., Sept. 13, '04. Hou. T. E. Barkworth, Jaekson, Mich.: Although congratulations aTe due you as the unanimous choice of your party for an exa(ted position, yet I Tjeg to remind ycm 1 liat you are a sclí-convicted ass. Under prior arrangement, I send this at your expensa. Hon. Bowland Conner, of Saginaw, is the mame o!' the democratie nominee for cougress in the Sth district. Hon. liowland Conner ! Let's see ! Ití lie not the man who -went out of his way ito insult the members oí the Michigan Press Association, at thelr meeting in that city a few years ugo? The name sounds familiar some way, and there is an unpleasant association wlth it also. Guess he must be the eame man. The press of Michigan, irrespective of party will no doubt give Mr. Conner the support li e deserves. He made no exceptions in bis insult. It was sweeping and all embraeing, and these men all have good memories, no doubt. Here is some most excellent advice given in the New York Sun, by one who is termed a "íalíen woman." She says : "This is the best way to help do away with disreputable liouses : Bring up your sons as well as your daughters to bc chastp. Teach them that it is as Tile and degrading for mn to live ini]iure lives as it is for women to do so. Iet society insist tlmt men be virtuous to enter respectalfle houses ; and if men fall, let society treat them as it does the 'fallen women.' " Does she not teil the truth ? Does not society damn the woman, but open its anms to the harlot, the roue and Uie rounder ? And society seldom knows where its boys are after dark.
