Axx Ahbor, March 7, 1895. Hou. f'. G. Dading, Mayor. Dear Sir ; - As an observer and being desirous ofeeingyour administration a success, I feel il niy duty (as a member of the Municipal Club), to bringto your notice some facts relating to gambling dens within the city limits. I believe you do not know of sueh a place and thiok you ought to be posted regarding thera. Sometimt's I have thought your officers were knowing to the facts and certainly if tliey do not they are not fit to liold their positions. There exists a full fledged gambling den where students and others congrégate and gamble for money during Sundays and nights, also run a bar on the upper floor after hours and Sundays. I would suggest to you that you hire a private detective for a week and gather j'our information outside of your marshal as I cannot but believe that he knows of the f acts. The good inoráis of the city demand tliat all such liell-holes be squelched and the offenders brought to justice. Our students and young men of the city should be protected in sorae way Erom being robbed and ruined by that class of deus. I had thought to )ut an article in the papers but in justice to you, thought the best plan was to cali your attention to it first. Yours respectfully, Observer. The above is a sample letter of the uionymous letters the mayor ally gets. If the writer will go to tlie city marshal at any time that efficiënt officer stands ready to take the comjlainaut through the rooms ref erred to and show him there is no bar or gambing lay-out. No students or young men are to be found there, and there s nothng to corrobórate tlie statements. When people hear rumora going about t is always best to go to the mayor or narshal, teil thein about it, and what seems out ot' place oftentiniës may be 'xplained.
