The periophthalmus, one of the most remarkable of several species of dry-land flsh catalogued by the naturalists, is a native of Mauritius. He is only four or five inches long, but has a head, very prominent eye3 and side fins which bear a strong reeemblanoe to legs. They have the curious habit of leaving the water in the evening1 and spending tho entire nig-ht hunting1 the nocturnal insects which inhabit the muddy flats near the tide water.
