The effect of the bond issue in advancingthe rate of interest to those wlio, in the ordinary course of business, are compeled to borrow money, was referred to in the American Economist of February 22. Our opiniĆ³n is conflrmed by Bradstreet's which, in its issue of March 9, said : Another matter which is not unlikely to have further influence is the improvement in the money market. Cali loans have ruled imich flrmer, and though the demand for other classes of accommodation is not at all large, it is noticed that tenders are much firmer in regard to rates, and that the supplies of loanable funds do not seem as excessive as they were only a short time ago. This result also, it is believed, has a connection with the operations of the financial interests which fonn the bond syndicate. In earrying out their arrangements they have accumulated considerable amounts of money, and itis thought that their efforts are to force loaning rates to a higher level and thus aid in attracting foreigu money to this country
