Michigan was handled without gloves at Evanston last night in the seeond annual Inter-University debate with tliat institution. She lost for the seeond time to that University by this score : Michigan 1539J6, Northwestern 1638. In accordance with expectatious, Vice President Stevenson was there to 'preside at the debate. He made a neat speech of general introduction,aud then Mr. Sadler opened the debate for the affirmative in an able argument. Michigan's two other represmtatives, Messrs. Oxtoby and Kimball, supported the affirmative well. Northwestern attacked their argumente violently. Her speakers were Eli P. Bennett, of Pittsburg ; H. F. Ward, of Los Angeles, and H. W. Cook, of Iowa. The judges appointed do not appear to have kept their engagement very well, those officiating being Gen. O. O. Boward, of Vermont; Gen. F.C. Ier, of Milwaukee, and Chanccllor McLain, of the Universit)' of lowa. The debate, which was held in the First M. E. church of Evanston, drew out au audience that completely filled the edifice, and hundreds were compelled to retire unaccoimnodated with seats. Both Vice President Stevenson anc General Howard were loud in praise of the debaters of both sides, saying that the debate as a whole was the best thai they had ever heard. The vice presi dent remarked iu closiug his address that the futures of the reputations o both the great universities were safe ii the hands of snch young men.
