Under date of 1573, in an ancient work concerning )iLe in ííngland in Shakespeare's youth, we read: "In these daies the taking in of the smoke of the Indiai! hevbe called 'Tobacco' by an instrument formed like a little ladell, whereby ie passeth from the mouth into the hed and stomach, is gvetlie taken vp and vsed in England against Rewmos and some other diseases ingendered in the longes and other partes, and not without effect. The herbe Tobacco is commonly of the height of a man, with grete long leaues; the collour of the floure is carnation, resembling that of the lemmon in form, the roote yellow witli tn:uiy fillettes."
