The honor of the Victoria Cross has for the flrst time in the history of that order been conferred upon a colored man- a coal-black negro who saved the life of hls superior offlcer on the field of battle by throwing himself in front of his commander and receiving in his own body the bullets that would otherwise have struck his chief. The darkskinned hero is a corpora] in one of the West India regiments of the British army.
