Col. J. "W. Childs, a former Wasiitenaw resident, died on Mandag oí last Week, at his home in 'Washington, D. C, aged 62 yeairs. He was an oíd isoldier, hoving terved tfhrough the war with the 4tla Mich. Yolunteer Infantry. The deceased was the oldest child oí ttoe late Hon. Aaron Childs, of Augusta.. He was a brotiher of Mrs. Robert Campbell, W. K. Childs and Miss Alma C. Cailds, of this city, and E. M. Childis, of Ypsilantl. He leaves a wwlow and one daughter, MlSB Elaine Childs, who is a taember of the class of '96, literary department of the University of Michigan. Ooi. Childs earfcered the service in May 1851, as major of the Fourth Miolüg-an. Inf. and was afterwards eolonel of th eregiment and as Kuch ■tiook part in nearly all of the batoas lm th army al the Potomac. At t'he end of his sei'vice as eolonel of the Fourth Regiment, he entered the regular army and eerved until 18(58, when he resigned froni the service io eot-er business. The Detroit Free Press o; last Thursday, contained the following account oí Col. Child's funeral : Wasliington, I. C, May 27,- The ïemains of the lat eOol. Jonathan "W. Childs, formerly commander of the Fourth Michigan Infantry, arrived ia the city over the Baltimore & Ohio R'y f rom Hanover, Md., the late home of the deeacsed, at 2 o'clock this afteimoon. They were met by a committee of th eGrand Army, lieaded Tjy Gn. I. C. Abbott, formerly eolonel o tïie First Michigan, and a committee from the Michigan state association headed by Acting President Edwin Willits. Many friends of the (Ieceased also assembled at the depot. The funeral party formed at the station and was driven to Axllnglbo)n cemetery, where C-ol. Childs was Turied. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Byro-n Sonderland, the veteran pastor of the FiMtPres"byterian cliureh, who was a personal íriend oí taie deceased."
