I am a believer in the principie of protection beeause it gives the work of this repnblic to our own workingmen, to whom of right it belongs. Employment is essential to the vveil being and happiness of the peo])le. It brings prosperity and content and inspires patriotism. Idleness, upon the other hand, is proliíic of discontent and social disorders of every character. 1 am therefore in favor of that policy which will lig-ht the fires in our own furnaces, start the wheels in our own faetones, furnish labor for our people, develop our own magnificent resources, furnish a home market for öur own producís, and which will come nearest to making' us a self-sustaining', independent nation in every particular. The protective principie, wisely and justly applied, will aid greatly in bringing about these ciesirable enrls. But it ought never to be invokcd for the benefit of any special interest, class or section, or be permitted to foster any monopoly or combination against the public interest. It must protect the wool grower as well as the wool manufacturer, the producer of raw materials as well as the producer of the finished product. In short, it must be as braad as the union itself, and must be adjusted to guard evesry American industry which needs its shel arm to shield it from the cheap and degrading competition of other lands.- Hon. Lee Mantle, United States senator, of Montana. X RAYS ON X ROADS.
