In the last issue of the Register is found this "sarkastic"' item: The Courier force was represented on both sides of the feuce in the Pingree contest in the ward caucuses Monday night. Xothing like being ready for eniergencies, no difference wliich way fortune smiles ! Tbat statement simply reflecta the miud of the oue wlio wrote it, and shows what he would do if lie had the power. It is usless to say the Register "force" represented themself on one side only. It is not out of place to state here that the people connected with the Courier are never interfered witli in the exercise of their rights as free A inerican citizens. And again, in the farther interest of brotherly love and affectiou the Register says : rbere is one person in AVashtenaw county wlio was exceedinaly anxious to appear, at least in sonie official capacity, before the couuty convention Thursday. But it seems not to have occurred to any one to suggest his name to the chairinan for appointinent upon any of the conimittees. Although his hankering for official position bas become a standing joke, he bobs unserenely on every occasion. He got there Tuesday, as usual, but in order to do so he had to ask to be appointed teller. The appeal seemed sn pathetic that the chairinan aiipniuted him at the tail enil of the lit. Of cour.se personaranimosiiv aganist a former partner had mtthing ilo with that item. It is simply a passionate appeal for party liarmony, and all around jood feelinir. Pathetic scènes are oecurrlng daily at the eounty jail. Sheriff Judson has finally begun to pay the berry pickers and laborera swindled by the Conrath brothers the proper proportion of the nioney he has managed to serape together from the sale of what the Conrath's left. Many of the ehildren can't understand why they don't receive all that is owing them. Soine of them burst imto tears Avhen told that they can have no more money. ïhe Centennial Mills at Lapeer are again in operation. J. M. Swift, of this city, proprietor of the St. Clair Flouring Mills from '70 to '02 and of life-long experience in the flouring business, is its manager. Mr. Swift has latterly been knowa through hig connection with the firui of Swift t Co., in our city. He expects to move his family to Lapeer next rnonlh. Aside from an older married daughter liis family consists of wife, son and three daughters. Practical familiarity with his business from boyhood lip, is an assurance to tha people of Lapeer of good
