Prof. O. F. ("-ook, of HuntJngkon, JU I., wlio has spent the winter in Liberia, África, studying the. plant and aiumaj life of that región, has returned to hia home. He says, according to the Eepublic, that the advantages of África aa a place of residence, even for the white race, are but imperfect.ly understood. Liberia is naturally no more unhealthful than other tropical countries, in which civilizntion has taken root, sueh as India and South Amtrica, and, as in these cases, the healthfulness increases as the forests are cleared away and better eonditions of life rendered jx-wsible through improvements in transportation. Mr. Cook has spent several seasons in África in purauing his investigation in the interest of the American and the New York State Colonization societics, with a view to ascertaining the possibility of resuming, under new plans, the colonization of Liberia with negroes from the United States. He says former movements in that directlon have failed throuffh want ofroper management rather than on account of any insurmoirotable difficulties inherent in the idea of colonization or in tlm nt.ure.of the. country wheresettlements of American negroes were attempted. That something is possible. he says, is demónstrate j by tiie fact that many colonists who lef t America 13 or 20 years ago with have now coffee farms, yielding incomes greater than their owuers can spend, while others have achieved independence in much less time.
