One oí our merchants was asked the other day : ''WTiy do you merchants encourage the creüit system ?" The answer was : "TVe do aot. We do our best to discourage it." Then came this : "Oh, yes, but you do. Ii the system were not encouraged by the merchants it would not be tn existence to-day. Did you ever stop to think that the merchantile coinmunity of the country are the only body of men that tolérate the credit system. iLet's see, doiyou buy postage stamps, postal notes, money orders, etc, on credit ? Try it and what will you be told. Go to the theatre and you pay money. Express companies demand cash, and railroad tickets are cash om delivery to the purchaser. Why should not the merchant demand cash ? Shnply because he entourages the credit system. It may be an impossibillty to completely enadicate the system, but strict limita; ions on credit is a step on the ilght raad, and its evolution will be practically a cash basis system oí doing business. It wouüd quickly spread, like measles in a country school, and whep it does it will solve the great problem for all time. When siited down it would be found tha.1 the credit system is the progenitor of and responsible for more evils that efiect the financiad business world than all other agencies combined. Xot oh'.y this bul it fotsters extravagance- the purchasc of goods which eau be very well done without."
