A protest has been made against constraetimg sewers in what will be kitown as the Ann etreet lateral sewer district No. 7. It May be well to walt ïor a time until the people feel that they are better able to pay far their construct ion. But then again there is an injustice in doing that, for there Is not a more thickly populated district in the entire city thian is reached by this sewer. The nouses are close together, and t'he cesspolls are poisoning the earth by the filtering therein of the sewage of the dwellings. The city has constructed sewers in a portion of the city where they will not be needed for the next twenty years at least, and now a portion of tihe city tfhat really needs fihem most, is forced to go without them. There' has been some mighty big 'blundering somewhere by somebody It will certalnly be a hardahip to a great many people to construct these sewers npw, and so it will at any time, ftml the question quite naturally arises, will the sewers "be of any benefit to our city if the thinly populaited outskiirts are given connection therewith whlle a thickly settled portion, in the very heart of the city, is decied the right and prlvüege ? The mammer of payment, dividinsr the coat of oach assessment into four equal installments, payable yearly, relieves the great burden from t)he tax-payers, and when they come ■to look at it seriously it is not so diföicult ás they thmk for. There is anotber thlng that is radically ■wrong. There Is no use of havlng sewers unless every residence or building Is compelled to connect therewith. Aind we are told thiat not over onetiMrd of the houses om the lines of the lateral sewers already sonstructed have made connecttons. Where 1b the defect ? Is It in the law, or fn 'the officers who fail to enforce the law ? The school board met last nlght and amoog other business transacted viofted to have a part of the basement on the BOTïth eaá of the High School building cleaned out for a gymnasium, at a cost of $300, the amount paid last year for the use of the McMlllain Hall gymnasium. Profs. Springer and Joeelyn agreed to glve the puplls Instructions In calisthenics. The socfial of the M.
