The sixth animal volante of the international unlvereity catalogue, edIted and published by Kart Trubner, of Strassburg', öermany, unider the title "Minerva," has just appeared. It is richer in material than any of it predecessors, and superior In point of accuracy. Each suecessive year shows a necessity, in splte of the most severe pruning, for lnerettse of space. Vol I. (lS91-'92) contaimed 359 pages ; Vol. II. 827 pages and eacli year has slvown slnce then an increase, uittil the present volume reaches 1,082 pages. There has been added this year to the material iiicluded iri the publie.atkm the learned ed societiee of the world anul the museums of natural hlstory and crchaeology. The book becomes, therefore, In reali'ty what its title-page propoees a "Jdhrbuch der gelehrten Welt." lts index includes about 27,000 names, and by means of it is possible fco lócate practically every scholar or acad mie offlcer ia the civilized worl ', The book also gives tolerably complete Information regarding the revemies and expenditures, the calendan?, the terms of admision, the tuition charges, the size of librarles, number of studeats, etc, of t)toe different universities. Por iuformaition concerning organization and foundation reference is made, in deferente, to the requiremente of space, to the earlier volumes. A compaTison of the different volumes yields some mot uninteresting facts concerning the relative growth of the different institutions in number of studente ; thus. for the first ten American univei-sities, the order in the different years is as follows : 189i-'9S. 184-'9ó. 1. Harvard, Harvard, 2. Michigan, Michigan, 3. Yale. U. of Penn., 4. U. of Penu., Yale, 5. Cornell, U. of Minn., 6. ('olurnbia, Columbia, 7. U. of N. Y., U. of Calif, 8. U. ofMinu., Coruell. 9. U. of Wis.. Cbicago, 0. U. of Calif. U.of Wis. l.S9-'94. 1895-'96. 1. Harvard, Harvard, 2. Michisan, Michigau, H. Yale, U. of Peim , 4. U ol Penn., U. of Minn., 5. Colnmbla, Yale. 6. Cornell, U. of Calif, 7. U of Wis., Columbia, 8. U. of Miun., Chicago, 9. U. of Calif, Cornell, 0. Boslon. U.of Wle. It is to be desired tliat a more complete account of tlue income of the different Institutions might be given. Some of the unive"si;ies withheld the data on thiB polnt, though it lts difficult to understand what purpose Ui eubserved therehy. The book is so useful amd its space so precious tbat it would niow seem proper to dispense wich the seventy-five pages í advertisem-ente which incumber and Ifefigure ii.-
