The Sultan's hesitation to rëceive Dr. Angelí as American Minister to Tmkcv H sincerely to be deplored on all grounds. Such an incident is alwtiya unfortunate on general principies. It causes an anpleasaut hitcli in diploniacy andoften gives rise to disagreeable of unfounded suspictons and prejiiices. The present case is especially to be regretted, becaüse, as is confidently Uelieved, the appointmeutof Dr. Angelí was a particulaiiy fit one, givingproraise of beneficent resulta to both countries concerned. An experienced diplomat and a man of broad syfnpathies and judicial temperament, In1 would sorve well the iatere3ts of his owii Government with scrupulous regard for the susceptibilities of ttwt to which lie was accredited. Ií he were not to go to Constantinople, some other wonld have to go in his stead ; but it i.s scarcely to be supposed tliat any one else could be found able to fill the place more satisfactorily than he. The reaaon for the Sultun's objection s frankly stated. Itisthat Dr. Angelí is ameinberof "a Christian order whose animosities against the Jlahometan religión are extreme." That surely must be founded npon a naisapprehension. As a Christian, Dr. Angnll undonbtedly disbelieves in Mahometanism. He would be glad to see all Mahometana converted to Christianity. He is a friend of ïnissionary work in the East. But so have fonner MmiStera to Turkey been Christians, and they have not on that account been objectionable to the Sultan nor failed to fill the place properly. Dr. Angeli's Christianity raay be of a more devont and fervent type than thatofsome of them, but there is no reason to believe it would be so manifested as to be personally oEfensive to the Sultan or politically detrimental to the interests of the Turkish Government. ]{ any injudicious utteranees by overaggressive inissionariesorsensational publications in the newspaper press liave persuaded the Sultan othervrise, it ought to be possible to convince hini that such imputations to Dr. Angelí are baseless.-
