9 Manager Lisemer had to offer a big guarantee to induce Ward # & Vokes to play in the Athens Theatre on the 4th instant. Upon J the reeeption given these comedians- undoubtedly the greatest in 9 ■O their line of business on the American stage, and the exceedingly excellent company of 32 people witli which they are surrounded- will largely depend the success of the theatrical season in Ann $ Arbor. If Ward & Vokes open the Athens Theatre withalarge house, tlie dramatic papers, who watch the success of such aggre gations as that headed by these comedians, will speak oi Ann Arbor ft as a good theatrical town, and other stars will wish to play here. Our business men should take possession of the opera house on J Saturday evening next and attend the show witli their families, or fi permit their clerks to go. Mr. Lisenier is spending the time and money to give Ann Arbor a reputation as a good theatrical field, v JJ now let our citizens do the rest. A great university town is in need : of a good line of attractions such as Mr. Lisemer is giving us, if ït a wishes ns to offer inducement to students- especially the wealthier class - to attend college. . ïho advantage to our city of a;"0'1 theatrical entertainments cannot be over-estimated. A good theatre means more to Ann Arbor than it does to most towns. We are the center of the educaw tional life of the AVest. During the theatrical season we have a largo transient population that demanda such amusements and are willing to pay for the best. The presence or absence of them will have its infiuence upon the growth of the student population. Mr. Lisemer has done his part in this matter. It now remains for the S citizens to do theirs, for the hearty and loyal support of the citizens of Ann Arbor is necessary for the success of the undertaking. Now let us all turn out and attend the opening of the Athens J % Theatre, Saturday evening, Sept. 4.
