We have no power to pre vent this great inquity beneath which the whole world groans and staggers, but you have power t cleanse the flags of every clime trom the stain of their complicity with this unminglad curse. We therefore come to you with the united voices of representative women from every civilized nation ander the áhn, beseeching you to strip away the safe-guards and sanctions of the law from the drink traffic and the opium trade and to protect our homes by the total prohibition of this two-fold curse of civiüzation throughout all the territory over which your government extends
