" Ouly a Furmer's Daughter " has a pronounced melo-dramatic tone ; it is highly emotional, and, it mght be said, sensational; and having a strong plot, and being very skilfully constructed, it föllows that there are many strong situations and plenty of life and acting all through - in short, that it is a very effective acting play. In addition to thw, it should be said that the dialogue is as good as the plot and the process f the developement, that the parts are nearly all effective, and that the denouement is novel, ingenious, and hihly impressive. - N. Y. World. The play is entirely orierinal, embodies many commendable leaturea, and is free frora the sickly sentimiiitalities and trashy Frenchisms that even some authors of acknowledged ablity deern essential in catering to certain depraved tastes. It possesses a wholesome, refreshing moral tone, and we commend the bold stand of Mr, Brnes in bis effort to raise the wavering standard of the American drama. The plot, though at times intricate, holds its interist from the beginning to tbe close, and is sufficiently versatile to awaken tre quent enthusiastic outbursts. The audience was well nigh unbounded in its manifestation of approval of the conceplion and rendition of the leading role?, and even the minor readings elicited appreciative applause. - Home JournaL
