Editor Kegister:- A remarkable and disgraceful wrang'e seems to exist among our city officials. About a week ago a complaint was made against Chris. Milman for keeping hia saloon open after lawful hours. A warrant was issued and the Mayor eoon after told the Marshal to tear up the warrant aad not serve it. It ha8 not been torn up nor has it been served. Soon after complaints were made and warrants issued against two other saloon keepers a&d the Marshal was inetruoted by the pólice committee of the common council not to serve the walrauta unless the warrant against Milman was served. Neitber of them has been served This isanoutrageous usurpaticn of powyer b (he Mayor and pol;ce committee aud the Mayor set the example. It seems all the more unlavíful and inexcusable when it is known that the complaints were made under a statute of this state and not" under an ordinance of the city. These local officials should know that they have no more authority to instmct the marshal not to serye a warrant iseued on proper complaint, for violation of either a state lan' or city ordinance than the king of the Cannibal Islands. If the Mayor had such power he should have more sense than to exercise if, for the result of such interference is already shown in the tact that two other warrants are now tied up by the pólice committee and there may be a general íuspension of the statutes and ordinances to favor the saloons. But this is a fflorious country, as will be proven next 4th of July.
