In the August Century General Joseph E. Johnston gives an inside view of his campaign in"Opposing Sherman's Advance to Atlanta;" Colonel Henry Stone describeB "Hood's Invasión ot Tennessee," after John8ton had been relieved and Atlanta had fallen. Colonel Stone's paper includes a description of the battles of Franklin and Nashville. Among the several interestin g contributions to the "Memoranda on the Civil War" is a letter from General Grant, hitherto unpublished, in which he gives his reasons for accotding liberal terms to the Vicksburg garrison. A tinsmith near Exeter bas a Bign whioh reads : "Ouart meagures of all shapes and eizes sold
