At the regu'ar ccvennnt meeting of the First Baptist church, Not. 30, a conamunieatioa from their pastor, Eev. Samuel Haskell, was read, the substance of which was given by The Register laet week. At tbat meetirg, the eleik of the church, Prof. V. M. Spaidinif, was instructed to prepare a letter to Dr. HBskell expres=ive of the sen'iments of the cburch on his services. Last evening the following letter was pre8ented to the church by Prof. Spalding and was adopted : Dr. Samuel Hwskeü-OvR Deae Pastor:- In receiving irom you the anouDcement of your wish to close the pastoral work in which you have so lone been ergaged, we are moved to express the sincere gratiiude of our hearis that God has so greatly blessed the relation still existina between us as pastor and people and to assure you of the deep and steadfat love of those to whom you have ministered during the Das't sev. enteen years. We shall ever remember the uncompromisine faithfulness with which the truth of God hal been preached among us. the blameless life the patiënt endurance of evil, the calm trust 'that shone the more clearly when the heart was most sorely broken, the words of consolation í poken by the bed of death, the wise counsel and needful admonition, the rare liberality with which you have, beyond what was due, shared in maintaining the work of the church, and added to all and manifest in all, the strong Chrtstian man nood that with more eloquence than that of words has shown what goodness Is and hae constrained even those who are not of us to acknowledge the power and nobility of such a life Itis notnow the time to recall in detail your hfe-long service to the church aside from the duties of the regular pastoral work. In the conyentions of the State, in missionary enterprises in councils unnumbered and in ways and places ftill unknown to many of us your clear convictions and ready, practical wisdom have led the WuymPhaUnSthsuSUltieS ements to Nor is there need to speak of what you have been as a citizen in this community. As a sharer of its interetts end of its officia] duties you have been known by all asa public servantand a citizen worthy of all honor. We cannot express all that we owetoyoufor Tour mamfold service and your life and labor of love. V e are thankful that God has given you to see spme of the fruit of your labors in these closïng days.
