Prof. Elisha Jones lectured on "A Winter in Rome," Dec. 1, in the Congregational churoh to an appreciative audience. It described the great changes that have been going on in Rome during the decade just ending, especially in cleanliness, widening streets, and improvements in the eewerage ; the marvelous growth of the city from about 150,000, ia 1870, when all Italy became a united kingdom under Victor Emanuel, to 365,000. It related the disappointed expeetatioos of some travellers and the ludicrous experiences of others ; how ancient Rome carne to be covered with itWs; and also gave a description of the most important discoveries made through excavations within the last five yearg. The lecture closed with a brief allusion to the religious tolerance that prevails under the present governmeat.
