At 11:15 8. m. today, Prof. de Pont's residence, 23 Jefferson gt, bad a narrow escape from fire, and was the scène of a lively commotion. In one of the upper sleeping rooms, a coal stove was under full blast, and in close proximity to the stove were aome clotbes hanging over a chair. They ignited and were destroyed ; the chair was ruined ; the fire spread to the wall and blackened one corner ; and a valuabla bedstead was t-lightly damaged. The fire department was out and eztinguished the fire, doing little if any damage with watr. The Saginaw News rbvr: "A number of the friends of Dr. E. T. Loeffler gave that gentleman a pleagant surprise at his residence on Thursday evening, it being the Doctnr's birthday anniversary. Among the pleasant features of the evening was the presentation by Irs. Loeffler to her husband of a handsome oil painting of himself."
