To the Editor of Thb Register ! 8m :- Being gpmewhat of a literary turn of mind, I consider what I om about to write meritorioos enaugh to occupy space ín your valn&ble columns. I therefore request that you inaert this email letter in your next week's issue and place my name at the bottom in as conspicuous type as possible, to give effect. It is but recently that I have probed my knowledge and found without doubt that 1 am capable of great literary prodnctiong (of eourse on a email scaic at fint). If you will encourage me by sending posfpoíd a few words of congratulation and an occasional 5 bill, I think that in time I may be able to carry on quite an extensive newspaper correspondente and perhaps revolutionize notonly AnnArbor but the entire world (including Ypsilanti). I will make thesubject of this letter my first attempt at public wrlting- the old stale chestnut- California, lts advantages and dlsadvantages- (principally disadvantages). I will not attempt tocontrad.ct any recognized authorlty on California and lts early history. California, taken as a whole or in parts, and in the present and future tenses, will form the material I will grind into my first 60 or65 letters. Tbe San Jacinto valley is a part of California, TÍ., it is situated wilhin wbat is commonly kuown as the nes of this greatest of all great Californias. This fact, however, does notinfluénce the marketor the pricee of putty and chewing gum ia the Sandwich Islands, consequenüy we will drop it from our thoughte and return to our original topic : "Shall Prohibition include pop and peañuta?1' or "Will Belva Lockwood ever rule the MormcnB ' Chinese emlgration , so-called frewn portions of the population of China vluiting thii country and forgetting to return, is not as bad in San Diego now as it is in California, but it ie hoped this demoralizing condition of affaire will not last long after the University in moved to Detroit Some people claim that a restrietion act was paseed here by some person in power regu lating the tide Of incomers, but theonly proof they show is that a lone fisherman paddies np and down the Paclf e coast in a row boat and forbids all Chinamen whom he chances to meet, to enter this country. The oraniree grown near Loa Angeles are remarcable for their swéetness when they are well sugarcd ; while the oranges of Rivertide are nóted for tfeir cheapness, as a dozen can be bought at any time, when they are in season, for SO cents or 11.25; of conree when they are shipped way to Chicago and the Bast they have to charge 35 and 40 cents a dozen, grown on the same tree. It is truly said that California Is an earthly paradisc ; but to enjoy itfl beauties a traveld has tó be possessed of the patience of Job, the constitution of an ox and the credit of a Rothschild. As Shakspeare said when George Washington was piercing him with his gory sabre, "Give me California or give me pie," so say the Californians to thp tender feet : "tiive me thy all, then lay down and díe." Well, I am afraid I am taking np too mnch space in your paper ; but then lt is all so interesttng that I am c nfideiit your readers will be better satixfied with it ihaii wltb loe T. Jac bs last advertís -ment. I will stop wriiiiig, however. and if you are not sati-fied wlih my nretefTort, jat print it as advertisiug matter and d awon me for ihe amuunt, rather Ihan return it to me or lay it gently in the wate basket. It it comes to over 9Z you need n t print it. Your liierary contrlbntor. Bas Jacinto, Cal.. Feb 12, 1888.
