Toe following letter has been received in response to the offer of Dr. Gibbes to go aouth to study yellow fever. It haa been thought that the President would place the subject before cangress and endeavor to get provisión for a yellow fever commission. But Grover is mueh too interested in politica to think of such an unimportant matter as the discovery of the cause of yellow fever. Exkcutive Mansión, I WASBINf-TON, D. C, Oct. 10, 1888. 1 Hnn. James B. Angelí, Ann Arbor, Mich : Dkar Sir :- The President duly received yonr recent letter conveying tiie information that the services of Drs. Clubes and Huber are at tbe disposal of the government in connection with any scientific investleation that may be taken of the yellow tever, and I am directed to say that their ïenerous offer is appreciated and will be careiully considered in the event referred to, Veiy respectfully, D. 8. Lamont, Private Secretary. "That reply is as good as I expected," said Dr. Gibbes. "I merely wanted to show them in Washington that we are alive to the subject, and are ready to do good scientiflc work. We shall do good work in the University of Michigan. We ought to have greater harmony among scientific men. There is now great jealousy, and I doubt if those near the President would give us here a chance to go on such a commissinn."
