The Next Census
tVashington, April 27.- KobertP. Porter, the Superintendent of the Census, has recommended the appointment of J. C. Stoddfird as disburt-ing ofticer of the census and W. C. Hunt as statistieal expert. Mr. Hunt was formerly chief of the división oí results of the MasRachusetts cenöus. It is understood that both of these recommendations will be approved by Secretary Noble. Mr. Torter etates that no cl' rical appointments will be made until next year. He will, however, appoint a number of stattstical experts, and, as far as practicable, men who were engaged in the work of the last census. These men. under nis direction, will map out the work and prepare for the disposition of the etatistical returns, which will be made after the active operationg of the bureau are begun. Work on mortallty and vital statistics has aiready begun and blanks are being prepared.
