The anthorities were paraijzed and opposed to the mob was a very Inadequate force of pólice, special constables and Tolnnteers, armad only with botona. The rioters outnumbered tbem tiftoon to one, and were armad with sticks, stones, broken bottlen, cutlassea and pistola Tho city defender were overpowered and roughly handled, thoujrh they succeeded in taking 800 prisoners. The followlng day arms wore reaorted to and on the third day order waa re-established. The hospital were filled wltíi victima, a few of whom died. None of the Government forces were killed. Tho damage to the city ia estimated at oree 100,000.
