Kalamazoo, Mich., Afay 9.- A terrible accident occurred here Wednesday evening. At about 8 p. m. switch engine No. 5 on tha Michigan Central recelved orders to proceed to Oshtemo, the first station west of here, to aid the New Yorh and Chicago llmlted, which had mei with an accident. At West Main Btreet crossing a city railway car was ap. proachinf?. The driver, the gates not be. ing lowered and no signáis, started to cross the track, when the car was struck squarely and carried fully a block. Thera were a dozen passengers on board at tha time, of whoin six were killed. They were : Mra. Van Antwerp, Miss Gertie Tillottson, Mrs. Alexander Hadlock, wife of the ïirofessoi of mathematica at Kalamazoo College; Mrs. M. L. Wattles, wire of the former división superintendent of the Lake Shore railroad; Mra. Qeorge Smiley, wife of a prominent Citizen; Mrs. Mlüdleton. The most severely injured are Mrs. John Barnes and Mra 8. A. Gibson. A number ot others were slightly hurt. L. C. Lull, tha drirer, and a boy on the platform escaped unharmed. All the dead were horribly mangled, the car being dragged nearly 10(1 yards. It is difflcult to deftnitely lócate th blame. The engineer claims that he wal ordered to run faster than usual Thosa who saw the accident say that the rat fax exceeded that allowed englnea to run inside the city limits. The gates at tha crossing wbere the accident occurred are not used between 5:80 and 6:5S p. m., the gatekeeper going home at that time. The custom probably deceived the driyer of the street-car, who was a new man, and who probably supposed that the gatea would of course be down if an engine wera cominor.
