A special meeting of the common council was held Tuesday evening, Aid. Ware being the only absentee. The meeting was caüed for the purpose of considering a communication from the board of fire commissioners, and to conaider an ordinance relatiye to moving buildings. The communication from the tire commissioners gave the estímate of the board for carrying on the department for the fiscal year, asfollows: five norse", $1,000; two hose wagons and extinguishers, $900; two sets of harness, $250 ; hose, $500 ; two brasa poles, $40; salaries, $2,320; feed, $267; pay for volunteer companies, $200; miscellaneous, $200; total, $6,177. Tbe flüance eommittee also submitted estimntes on the cost of running the fire department for the fiscal year, their estimates being considerably under those of the fire commissioners. They recommended that the appropriation be cut down to $4,000, for the reason that if all the boards are given the amounts they ask for, there will be no money in the treasury on February 1. Instead of the amount asked for the finance eommittee recommended the following : salaries, feed, etc, $2,140; two horses, $400; one harness, $125; one hose wagon, $470; furniture and fittings, $240; hose, $500; sundries, $125; total, $4,000. The amount actually expended for the fire department during the past year was $1,798.08. The report of the finance eommittee was accepted and adopted, thus limiting the amount to be expended for the fire department during the year to $4,000. An ordinance relative to streets, alleys and public places was reported for first reading. A resolution was adopted requesting the board of public works to instruct the street commissioner to inspeot all sic ewalks in the city with a view of makin a general order for repairs and new walks for the whole city, the council favoring the ordering of at least eight miles of new walks to be laid. Tbe council then adjourned.
