New Yobk, Aug. 20. -Nine persoDB were elther burned to death or mnothered early Monday by a üre whtcli broke out In tho kltchen of Snyder's restaurant on the Btore fioor of a flve-story tenement building at 806 West Seventh avenue, and overal others were lnjured. Snyder, the keeper of the restaurant, has been arrested on suspicion of causing the flre. A policy of insurance for tl,000 on hls Étook was found in his possession, and one of the employés states that he found fat Éfittered over the floor of the restaurant The tenenient was occupied by slxty people and all were sound asleep when tho tire broke out The building was damaged $10,000. The dead are : Wllliam Glennon 60 vears, burned to death; Nellle McGeoghan, 80 years, smothered to death; Mary Wells. 31, smothered; Jane Wells, 4 smothored; Thomas Wells, 8, smothered; Bertba Lustte, 40 burned to death; Willlam MoKee, 4T, burned to death; Jane Jeflrey, 65, smothered; AnnieLyons, 45 years, smothered. Wllliam Glennon, Jr., and John Glennon were badly burned and are at the hospital. The fire was disoovered by two polioemen, who torced an entrance into the burning building. The fiaraes were extinguished easily enough by the tiremen, and the people in the fire escapes were landed safely. The first body fouod was that of old WilUam Olennon. The remains were discovered by the slde ot the bed in hls room on the Becond Hoor. He had rlsen to fly with hls sons, but hls old legs were not nlmble enough, and ha perlshed. The boyi were taken to the hospital. They were badly burned on the feet, caused by walking on the hot Iron bars of the flre-escape. In the rooms of the Wells family was a sight whioh can not be easily forgotten. In the mlddle of the floor knelt the mother, Mary Welli, and in her dead embrace was her ehlldren, Jane and Thomas. They had been smothered, meroifully enougn, and not a burn or blister def aoed the pallor of thelr countenances.
