NbwYork, Sept 14.- The flfty American worktng-men and women who wentto Europe last July to invetigate the conditlon of the European workmen returned Thursday night in the steamer City of Kome. Mr. Thompson said of the workmen on the ether side : "They are not to be compared with ours. Almost every trade was represented in our party, and they examined oarefully the products and machinery ot the old country. It was observed that the machinery was cumbersome and lacks the compleieness that is seen in our country. We have had remarkable success trom the time we started. We were met ererywhere with courtasy and treated In the best possible manner." In Glasgow the party vislted every steel and iron place except the factories of Campbell, and here admittance was refused them. It was found that wages wera 33 per cent lower than In this country. H. M. Ogden, of Cincinnati, went with the party and inveetigated the printing trades. He said that in Europe they are about where the printers of this country were twenty years ago. They were quick in their typographical work but the result was not so satisfactory aa here. There were 4,00ftout of la, 000 printere organized, and out af thia number 1,300 ■were women. Joseph Tüorpe, of Murphysboro, I1L, looked into the eneineering work in Europe. They were not organized. Their wages were about 50 per cent. lower than in this country.
