The National Federation of Labor has resolved that on the first day of May, 1890, a demand will be made all over the Union for the eight houra working day. If the movement is heartily entered into by all classes of working peoplo, and if thcy stand by their demand, it is believed they will gain the day this time, althougli a like attempt failed in 1886. One of the leaders of the movement saya it L a "peaceful, thoughtful andresoluto expression of the extincts of humauity striving for the betterment of all the people." Many persons are looking thoughtfuüy and intelligently into the causes which leave hundreds of thouKamls unemployed and in pauperism even in America. One of the causes U believed to be the factory system. Mr. Carroll Wright, the labor commissioner, says it is estimated that each employé under the factory system representa in 1882 at least fifty employés under the oíd individual system. For instance, 1,100 threads are now spun at the same time where a hundred year3 ago only one was spun. Abram S. Hewitt recently called attention to the fact that machinery is taking the place of muscle in our industrial processes, sometimos enabling one man to do the work of a thousand. What will then becomo of the other 999? The National Federa tion of Labor are of opinión that the eight hour working day will give some of thein a chance. The Socialistio Cooperativo Federation of London is to establish several stores. Thoy will be on the plan of the other great co-operativo 6tores of London, with features of their own. The labor day in them will be eight hours, for which the stores will pay f uil trad es nnion ratis The tin and fhect iroD workers have abandonad the Knights ot Labor ni organiV.ed a national union.
