Not A Genuine Republic
Nkw Youk, March 4.- The steamshin Ilolbein, Captain Joshua Davis, arrived Monday with a cargo of coffee and wool brought f rom Rio Janeiro, f rom which port she sailed February 13. In an interview Captain Davis said: "The military rule in Brazil is much worse than Dom l'tdro's reign ever was. It ís government wilh a high hand under tha cloak of the name of 'republic' which is in fact no republic at all. The voice of the peopie is soarcely heard in expressing opinión as to how the Government ought to te run. Thinss will continue in thia way until the elections in September, but whcn the military attempt to make those Brazilians vote for any one connected with the present Government there will be trouble. The Braziliun pres9, at the point of the bayonet almost, is publishing pleasing accounts of the general satistaction of the peopla constituting the so-called Brazil republic. The newspapers do not dare print any thing against the Government for fear thoy willbo suspended.'1
