Yesterday it was announced that the university authorities had effected a purchase of land to be used for athletic purposes. The land comprises ten acres owned by Jno. JF. Lawrence, adjoining State st, justacross the road from Hamilton, Rose & Sheehan's addition. The price paid by the regents was $3,000, to which several citizens added $1,000 in private subscriptions. A paper is already being circulated for the purpose of securing enough money in addition to what is already available, to build a gymnasium worth not less than $25,000. The amount already secured is so large that no doubt can be entertained of the ultímate success of the project. CAMPUS NOTES. There are 230 rnembers of the cboral unión. The Psi U's initiated ;their freshtnen last Saturday evening. Sixteen juniors were recently voted into the Omicron Phi. J. R. Arneil has been elec' ed president of the freshman medical class. The dramatic club will present the " Kough Diamcnd " in Jamiary. The members of the bicycle club will race to Ypsilanti and back next weck Saturday. Profs. Walter, Stanley and Kelsey will act as judges upon the articles contributed to the Palladium. The '91 independent girls have elected Misses Butler, Meiser, Szold and Cook members of the Castalian board. The freshmen will choose fifty picked men to particípate in the tug of war, which comes off on November 8. The glee club will probably sing in Detroit, Toledo, Monroe, Grand Rapids, Bay City and Saginaw beforeChristmas. Prof. Hinsdale will read a paper on "The Historical Method" before the philosophical society ,next Tuesday evening. The BetaTheta Pi club, with 30,000 capital, has flled articles of association. They will build a house in the near future. The sophomore girls enteitainea their freshinen sisters in good style last Friday evening. There was" weib and gesang," but no "wein." The fraternity men "scooped" everything at the rugby meeting last Saturday. The independents sulked and declared that they wouldn't play. The following officers were elected: President, VanDeventer; president, Wisner; secretary, Shaw ; treasnrer, Thayer ; directora, Stone and Marshall. W. Walter, '92 lit; Morris, '92 law; second bassos, J. O. Ballard, '91 medie; H. M. Joy, '93 medie; J. Mitchell, '91 law, and H. F. Worden, '94 lit. The series of concerts tobe given by the choral union during the present season comprizea the following: Ausder Ohe, November 1 ; New York Philhaimonic Club, December 10 ; Choral Union and full Orchestra, February 27; Arthur Foote, Pianist, Ladies' Choral Union in April; Boston Symphony Orchestra, two concerts in May ; Gounod's "Kedemptiou," Choral Union and Orchestra and first class soloist, in May. The above is the list if 2,000 tickets are sold The first five will be given if 1,200 are sold. There seems to be a boom just now in Choral Union stock. There are 230 singers in the chorus and a magnificent series of concerts are in prospect if enough tickets are sold. The first concert will be given on Noy. lst by Miss Adele Aus der Ohe, pianiat, and Miss Mary Buckley, the popular contralto of Detroit. The following is the program : 1. Sonata- Op. 53, Beethoven;. Song, Bizet; 3. (a) Gavotte b minor, Bach, (b) Nocturne, (c) Valse, Chopin ; 4. Come to me, Walhain ; 5. Fantasie C major, Schubert; 6. Autumnal Gale, Grieg; 7. (a) Nocturne, (b) Don Juan Fantasie, Liszt.
