Hon. James E. Boyd, who won at the recent full elections, will be Nebraska'a first Democratie fiovernor. lie was born in 3ounty Tyrone, Ireland, Sept. 9, 1834, and came to Araerica when 10 years old, locating in Belmont county, O. In 1S47 he went vrith his fatlier to Zanesville, where he lived until 18Ö6. In August oL that yeat he moved to Omaha, and engaged in the carpenter and joiner business anti] the panic of 1857. On Aur. 22, 1858, he was married, at Omaha, to Auna H. Henry, anative of Ilaniilton, MadIson county, X. J. A bout tliis time Mr. lïoyd went to Wood lliver, near tbe present tovrn of Gibbon, Neb., aud established astock farm, remaining there nine years. Duringa portion of tliispcriod he vas also ongaged in merchandising at Kearney City, two miles west of Fort Ke.irney. In 1886 be secnred a grading contract on the Uuiou Pacific and graded over 300 miles in about tliree yeara. In February, 1868, be returned to Omaha and iuvested more beavily tban any otber man in the gas works, of whicb bc was one of the principal promoten, and during 186 he was manager if che company. In the winter if 1869-7Ü he organi.ed the Omaha aml Northwestern raUroad. He waelected tta Btst president and built the road to ISIair. Duringthls pcriod bewas largely interested in tho oattle business, his ranch beiiiR located near Ogallalla. Iu 1872 lie disposed of hls cattle interests and enga;od in pork: packing in Omaha on a small sTale. The flrst year his men killed only 4,500 hogs, but with each year his business increased until in 1886 thêy killed 141,000 hogs. He continued the packing business until the suinmer of 1887, when he sold his establishment. Altbough no longer connected with the pork packing business, he is still actively engaged in other pursuits, and is a memberof the Chicago board of trade. In 1881 he erected Boyd's opera house in Omaha at a cost of over $110,000. In 1889 he sold the property, and iminediately began the construction of a new t heatre, whfch will cost, when cotnpleted f175 - 000. Mr. Bnyd has taken quite a prominent part in Xi-braska politics as a Democrat ever since becoming a resident of the state. In 1857 he was elected clerk of Douf;Ias county. While residing in Buffalo county he was elected to the first state leginlature in 1S67. He was also county clerk in that county, but resigned. He was elected on a non-partisan ticket to both the Xebraska state constitutionalconventions. Mr. Boyd Berrea as Mayor of Omaha for two torms from 1881 to' 1883 and from 1S85 to 1887. ín the senatorial campaign of 1883 Mr. Boyd received the vote oí the Democratie party for United States senator against Gen. Manderson. In the last presidential campaign he was a delégate to the convention which nominated Grover Cleveland, for whom he cast his vote. He is at present a inember of the national Democratie committee. Mr. Boyd was president of the Omaha board of trade from 1881 to 1883. Mr. and Mrs. Boyd have three children living- Eleauora, the wife of ex-United States Marshal Bierbcwer, and Margaret and James E., Jr.
