Michigan Republicans favor Blaine for president, but I think the Maine statesman is too shrewd and too sick to want ;he nomination. However, a year from now the revolt among the northwestern Grangers may compel the Republicans to look for a farmer candidate. Nine tenths of the clties in the northwest are Democratie, and a radical recognition of the farmers may be a political necesnity with the Republicana. . ín this emergeney theyare very likely V) Io9k to Michigan. Cyrus G. Luce, who completed a four-years' term as governor of Michigan last January, is today by all odds the ablest farmer-statesman in the Kepublican party. He is the most active and adroit politician, and the most effective stumper the Republicans have In Michigan. He is now diyiding his attention between his extensive farm in Branch county and a national bank, of which he is vice president, in Coldwater, but his back number plag hat and long linen duster bobupfrequently in every quarter of the state. That he is working for Senator Stockbridge's Dlace in 1892 is the popular idea, but those who know him best say he is gunning for bigger game, and is very likely to go to the next Republican national convention with the Michigan delegation bebind him. His"getthere" qualities have been giving the Republican politicians of Michigan a series of surprises during the past five yeare, and it is about time for the national politiciana to keep an eye on him.
