Chicagj, Aug. 10. - Yesterday wal the hottest of the year, the mercury reaching 96 degrees at 3 p. m. A refreshing shower shortly after that time cooled the air greatly, the mercury falling to 74 degrees, a change of 22 degrees within fifteen minutes. There were several persons overeóme with. the heat during the day, three cases proving fatal. St. Paul, Minn., Aug. 10.- The last few days have been the hottest experienced in Minnesota and the Dakotas since August, 1880. The thermometer has registered from 88 to 98 degrees in the shade in Minnesota and has run up from 103 to 111 in the Dakotaï. New York, Aug. 11. - In this city yesterday the thermometer registered 97 degrees in the shade and there were twelve fatal cases of sunstroke. Hundreds of horses succumbed to the heat all over the city. On no early August day for the last twenty years have the people of this city, Urooklyn, Jersey City, Newark and all the cities and towns adjacent to the metropolis sweltered and wilted as they did yesterday. Plaixfikld, Conn., Aujr. 11. - Monday was one of the hottest in years, and the drought is something startling-. All late crops are burning up in the ground and early ones have rrpened by the drought so quickly that they are badly dwarfed. The rivers, ponds and old mili streams are lower than for years. PlTT8BtiR(JH, Pa., Aug. IL - Monday was the hottest of the scason. At 12 o'clock the mercury stood at 90, 5 deRTees and a half higher than at noon Sunday. Ten prostrations and one death from heat have been reported.
