Cincinnati. April 3.- The municipal campaign which euded with the election of yesterdaj' was one of the hottest political fights kiiown in the history of the Queen City. The result is a victory for the republicans. The returns show the election of Hon. John A. Caldwell for mayor by a plurality of 6,7öO. He will therefore resign his seat in congress and a special election will be in order in the Second district All the other names on the republican ticket were renominations and cousequently reeloctions, andby pluralities rangiag op fco lo.OOO. The republicans carried everythinff at Lima, Hamilton, SVapakoneta and other places for the first time. Wapakoneta elects a república n mayor aud two republican councilmen. '1 iie republicana never before had a councilmun at apakoneta. Hamilton, which had anormal democratie majority of l,4U0, elects llenry Lots (rep.) city commissioner by 1,100 majority. Official returns from Cleveland show that the republicans have won by pluralities ranpfinfr from 3,000 to 5,000. In the presidential election of 1892 the city went democratie by 4,000 and last spring the democratie candidate for mayor had nearly 1,500 plurality. The republicans swept everything ln Cülumbus, electinjf the pólice judge and the entire ticket The city was carried for the democratie mayor last spring by 1,000. The republicans also elect seventeen of the twenty-two councilmen and about the same majority on the school board. Detroit, Mich., Aprils. - The returns from the municipal elections yesterday are mostly in favor of the republicans. There seems to hae been a general ehange of political sentiment, especially in cities and towns which have heretofore been oounted as safely democratie. In the smaller towns and townships the returns also show republican gains.
