London: A terrifio gale, accorapanied by a heavy snowfall, prevailed throughout the country. Th'e cAld was intense. Tlie t-.runv 'drifts in some places were twelve fèet deep, The mail cars were stopped. The drivers who attempted to make their trips suft'ered terribly. The highways are blocked and railway traffic delayed. The telegraph lines are down in all directions. All the croas-ehannei steamers were hours late. Several vessels were wrecked at various points and nuraerous lires lost. Two unknown ships went down in the Humber and all hands, at least 20 souls, were lost. The bark BriUiaot, Cuba to Haden, was wrecked, eight lives lost. The railway ferry Eric, opposite Hall, caught fire the storm and was destroyed. The schooner Balcay capsized off Xorth Sunderland point, and all her crew were drowned. A eoal-laden brig stranded at Bouthwalk, Suffolk. Her crew with the exception of one man were reqpued by a lifeboat. Two of of tliem died getting ashore. The liritish steameï lïewan foundcred in the liay of Biscay. Oneof her boats containing six men alive and two dead has been picked up. 1 he other boat, with Beven men. lias been lost. The Indian bark Theresina was wrecked near Strang-ford. The captain' and seven of the crew were rescued; three others were drowned. The brigantine Satis stranded at Donnanook, Lincolnsbire. The crew were rescued by the rocket apparatus. An unknown briofoundered off Hale. The crew peished. Several skating accidents and a number of deaths from azposure are reported. The French steamer Acanis foundered three miles o ft" Cape Caveau, France, during a cyclone. Tlnrteen persons were drowned.
