To the Editor of The Register: - In looking over the proceedings of our jnstiee courts printed in our city apers I do not understand to whom ustice is done. I see a number of cases of persons arrested as vagrants ; these 'vags" as they are called are given trom one to Bfteen days in jall. Now he question is does this pay the taxpayers of the city or county or does his make the vagrant any less a vagrant by these proceedings. The cause of these arrests seem to be a strife between the city pólice and the deputy heriffs to which side will make the arger number of arrests. It seems to ne that instead of increasing the taxes D this way during these so-called hard times it should be decreased. It does not seem reasonable that the offieers, such as the Justice of the Peace pólice, or deputy sheriffs are doing üieir duty towards their electors by niakirig these uncalled for arrests. Will some one or more of our intelligent taxpayers answer the following questions: lst. Does it pay to arrest a vagrant to be sent to jail tor one day? 2ud. A vagrant pays no fines, who pays the costs? 3rd. lf the above is true whose business is it to investígate?
