The couneil surprised itself last Monday nfght, after to the talks of representatives of different manufactures of road rollers and stone erushers, by decidiny to order the street committee to secure bLds and pmrhase a steam road roller and stone crusher. It is estimatod that those two machines will cost in the neighborhood of $4,500. This will all have to be paid out of the street, crosswalk and culvert fund as the couneil has 'no power to contract for more than it can pay for out of the funds ior the y bar for which it is elected. This will necessitate a curtailing of the expenses out of these funds. It is claimed that by the use of a stone crusherand roller the saving willbe sufficient in two years to pay for these machines. The couneil voied unanimously in favor of the resolution so that it is not at all likely that any change of front will be made. Wo may now hope to soon see some street work in the city that is not in dauger of being ruined by every little shower of rain that occurs.
