Tbe admission of six new states in the early years of President Harrison's administration was intended by the Reïntblicans to strengthen the party in the northwest for the contest of 1S92, and to make céVtain the control of the United States senate by the Republicans. As is often the case in politics, the plans arranged by the Republicans for strengthening themselves failed. Idaho one of the new states, was carried by the Fop.iüsts. North Dakota scattered lts electoral vote among the three candidat.es. The admission of the northwestern states gave an Ímpetus to the rree si;yer n,., .., ,.p. t vhich cost the Kepublicans the electoral votes of Kansas, Colorado and Nevada, and the changes in the United States senate consequent upon this free silver defection put the Demócrata in control of it. But in the last two years the poiitical peodulum has swung back again and the Republicans are now about to get, tardily it is true, some of the benefits of their legislation of six years ago. The next United States senate will contain twelve members from the newly admitted northwestern states. Oí these, ten are straight out Republicans onea Populist, and one, Roach of North uako, a Democrat. This gives tbe Republicans a lead of eight over the Demócrata and Populists combined. v ttnout the representan ves of the six nnW. ,nI'thwestern states, the next United States senate would consist of thirty-seven Democrats, thirty-four Repubhci!iS, and four popuiistg wlth Do.aware not included in the count. The Republicana would only have thirtyfour senators in a total of seventy-six 3 na mr. Cleveland would have for the next two years a Democratio instead of a Repubiican senate on hia hands tj cor arm or reject his noroinations
