The admlsslon of six new states in the eariy years of President Harrison'3 administration was intended by the Republicans to strengthen the party in th northwest for the contest of 1892, and to make certaiR the control of the United States senate by the Republicans. Aa Is often the case in politics, the plans arranged by the Republicans, for strengthening themselves failed. Idaho one of the new states, was carried by the Fopnlists. North Dakota scattered lts electoral vote among the three candidates. The admission of the northwestern states gave an Ímpetus to the free sih-er mfement which cost the Republicans the electoral votes of Kansaa, Colorado and Nevada, and the changes in the United States senate consequent upon this free silver defection put the Democrats in control of it. But in the last two years the political pendulum has swung back again and the Republicans are now ahout to get, tardily it is true, some of the benefits of their legislation of six years ago. The next United States senate will contain twelve members f rom the newly sdmitted northwestern states. Of these, ten are straight out Republicans, one a FoDuUdt. and one. Roach nf North Dako.'.r-, a Demoerat This gives the Republicans a lead oí eight over tha Demócrata and Populista comöined. Without the representatlves of the slx new northwestern states, the next United States senatcVould consist oí thirty-seven Democrats, thirty-four Republtc.i&s, and four Populists, wlth Dclaware not Included in the counf. The 'Republicana would only have thirtyfour senators in a total o( seventy-slx, snd iilr. Cleveland would havo for the next two years a Democratij inatead of a Repubiican senate on hi3 hands to coriirm or rcjcot nis nnnMnations.
