The admlssion of six new states in the early years of President Harrison's admlnlstration was intended by the Republicans to strengthen the party in the northwest for the contest of 1892, and to make certain the control of the UniteO Btates senate by the Republicans. As Is often the case in politics, the plans arranged by the Republicans foi Btrengthening themselves failed. Idaho one of the new states, Avas carried by the Fopulists. North Dakota scattered lts electoral vote among the three candidates. The admission of the northwestern states gave an Ímpetus to the free llef m-rfemerit which cost th Republicans the electoral votes of Kansas, Colorado and Nevada, and the changes in the United States senate consequent upon this free silver defection put the Demócrata in control of it. 'But in the last two years the politicai pendulum has swung back agaln and the Republicans are now about te get, tardil.' it is true, some of the ben, fits of their legislation of six years ago. The next United States senate will contain twelve members from the newly admitted northwestern states. Of the3c, ten are straight out Republicans, one a FojralM, and one, Roach of North Dako!;í, a Democrat. This give3 the Republicans a lead of eight over the Demócrata and Populista ctnnbined. V'ithoul the representatives of the six new northwestern states, the next United States senate would consi3t of thlrty-seven Democrats, thirty-four Republiojius, and four Populista, with Dolaware not included in the count. The Republicans would on.y have thirtyfour senators in a total of seventy-six, snd iilr. Cleveland wouJd have fur the next tvo years a Democratie instead of a Ee ubücan aenate on hi3 hands t'j corar or reject hi3 noiplnation.í.
