One ot the iu-incipal sources of the supply of caffeine iu England fs the sweepings of tea from the fioors of the various docks, wharvea and warehouse3 in London. These sweepings aggregate about 075,000 pounds of tea annually, or, with the dirt, nails, hoopiron and wood whlch gets mixed with the tea, to about 400 tons. :The loss to the tea importers annualïy is about $1J5,OOO. The sweepings have natura!ly a fair proportion of good to fine grade teas mixed with them, and consequently contain a larger amount of the active principie of tea, called by chemists "caKeine," than the low quality teas.
